Sunrise

This is how I recall my childhood in Fáskrúðsfjörður. Getting up at the break of dawn to go trout fishing in Dalsá river, watching as the sun rises over the horizon. When I saw a photograph by Jóhanna Hauks, of the sunrise, I felt that I had to paint this feeling. In just a few seconds the land becomes alive at the touch of light and warmth.

This picture also reminds me of a poem by Mary Oliver called “Morning poem”, where she says: “Every morning the world is created”… “Under the orange sticks of the sun the heaped ashes of the night turn into leaves again and fasten themselves to the high branches – and the ponds appear like black cloth on which are painted islands for hours, your imagination alighting everywhere”. The poem goes on and says everything you can say about this picture.
