Polar Bear

Polar bear

Every once in a while a Polar bear drifts onto Iceland’s shores on an iceberg, from the north pole or Greenland. In recent years us Icelanders have had two visits from these polar explorers. When the first one arrived, near Skagi the locals, not knowing how to react, shot the wild animal out of fear that it would enter their village looking for food. Many Icelanders were outraged that the animal was killed like this in stead of captured and either sent to Greenland or kept in Reykjvík’s zoo.

The authorities determined not to let this happen again had a cage built for just such an occasion. Only two weeks later another polar bear drifted here. When trying to get close enough to get the animal into the cage it took for the ocean so the authorities shot it so they wouldn’t lose it.
